Too Much Talking by saturdaymorningproj Too Much Talking by saturdaymorningproj
Big Mac got to talk a lot and he didn't like it xD

Honestly, I know this is half-assed sketch, but to be honest the latest episode haven't inspired me all that much. My feelings?
Eeeeeeh, I don't know. It wasn't "Slice of Life" level of episode - not that bad - I did enjoyed the way Starlight
tried to make friends with Ponyville folk - the moment she "fixed" Big Mac being my favourite moment here -
but a lot of it felt off, from small things like Fluttershy's fear of Manticore (that's a small detail but somehow it caught
my eye ) to some character reactions - Princess Celestia or Twilight especially - the handling didn't
sit with me well. It's sorta felt like some of the IDW's comics, some depictions of the character you know, feel weird at times in hands of various writers. Actually I expected the episode to go full one way or another - Trixie being actually
scheming something, or totally being honest. The episode itself flet like something in the middle
of those two. Yes Twilight had her paranoia and Trixie had her ego, so they were both at fault of misjudging each other but I think it could be done bit better. I suppose. Also, appearantly Twilight must be taught a lesson of trust each season O_o
I guess that's my biggest gripe with it - Twilight's paranoia level went ridiculously high here, and her hey-I-got-better-friend-for-you talk was
the peak of it.  Perhaps I hyped myself too much for it, but can't help like it could be way better.
I guess if some characters didn't feel too...off within the story, it would come up as better episode. But
different writers, different handling I suppose. It is a cringe-worthy episode at times. So far it's the weakest episode from this season's bunch.

After rewatching it few weeks later: Yup, still can't buy the way it was done. The characters of Trixie and Twilight were too off, points for Starlight, she's the most likeable and relatable in this episode, sadly the two other key characters should be handled better to depict their beef some more. Still the weakest episode this season.

Personal Ranking of the episodes so far:

1) The Gauntlet of Fire ( ep 5 )
2) The Gift of Maud Pie ( ep 3 )
3) The Crystalling ( ep 1 & 2 )
4) On Your Marks ( ep 4 )
5) No Second Prances ( ep 6 )

I actually thought they did a good job with the episode, one of my favorite episodes so far of the show. {Not saying it's because of Starlight who's my favorite characters besides Sunset and Pinkie... Okay, it had something to do with it. :D } Anyways, Twilight's paranoia didn't feel off to me. I found it actually in character with her since Twilight's.... a bit of a control freak and her sanity isn't always stable. She's gotten better at the second thing over time, but the first is still a thing with her. Twilight's paranoid not because of Trixie, but because Trixie disrupts Twilight's lessons.

Trixie is an unknown and Twilight wants her teaching's to go just as planned. She wanted Starlight to make a friend she could approve of and wouldn't disrupt her standing as a teacher. She even states that she thinks Trixie wouldn't make for a good first friend. She has points, since Twilight is trying to get Starlight into a more nicer and more calm outlook and Trixie is rather outlandish and isn't exactly a good role model. If Trixie was Starlight second or so forth friend, Twilight would be more calm about it. So really, Twilight's become a bit controlling of Starlight because she's viewed teaching Starlight as her newest 'assignment' to impress her former teacher. When it comes to keeping in Celestia's good book, Twilight tends to... become nuts. At least she didn't go off the deep end again.

Great artwork, by the way.

Well for the defense of the episode, Starlight is most reasonable, likeable and blievable character through the whole episode - Trixie and Twilight though...ugh... Anyway I get where are you from, but sadly I can't help but feel like things got forced for the sake of story's concept. That said, I will certainly give this episode another look after a while, perhaps I won't cringe about it next time, so far though, all I can say is, I get the idea, but the execution simply didn't worked for me, and actually it turned the way I was afraid it will when first reading the synopis. But hey, different people, different tastes, I like plenty of episodes that have recived mixed reception for example :P

Anyway, thanks for expressing your thoughts in well done manner, it was good read :)

It was no problem. People can't always like the same things and it does pay to have different perspectives of movies, episodes, and books. It's just the best thing to do is to do it civilly and I'm happy to know that you enjoyed my own thoughts. The same to yours. Perhaps you'll like it better on another rewatch, or not.

Either way, the best of wishes to you. {And Starlight is awesome, I know. :D}

Agreed, I just wish there was more people around that can actually express their opinions in suitable way, or not attack other people just for having different tastes on things - the more I apprecieate comments like yours :)

Certainly one of the highlights of the episodes, although Angel falling for Starlight was quite amusing too xD

I actually enjoyed the episode quite a lot, specially having Twilight still showing she has her own paranoia about people she helped, it kinda does show she ain't miss perfect and part of her still has this sort trust issue going thinking that not everyone can really change, which I'd say is a real reaction to people.

She has that issue thinking very often it seems. Quite paranoid, just like Batman. It's not like a thread that never happened before. Zecora in first season? Discord in last one? She had plenty of screw ups overall too, so you can't really say it was her first time at failing at something. It just felt a bit...forced for story's sake. Trixie's idea of having friend as win over Twilight was interesting theme, but it just could/should have been handled better. Actually this episode made me to dislike Trixie, as I don't feel like she's established as either reformed character or a little troublemaker, the 50:50 approach didn't worked for me here.

Oh, I'm not saying it's her first time, but it's kinda clear that Twilight has trust issues and doesn't instantly buy the notion of "This person has truly changed! 100%, no strings attached", it kinda does show she ain't really THAT naive when it comes to characters like Discord, Trixie or even Sunset, which again I'd say is more believable than her being a dumb and trusting clod who believes that the world is one green big M'n'M. As with Trixie, I think her idea of thinking that showing she has changed would be a win over Twilight, thus showing that she can put her ego aside and actually be a person Twilight wasn't expecting to ever be, but that's just how I see it ^^;

Seems like I wasn't clear enoguh: I have no problem with Twilight not fully trusting Trixie. I have problem with Twilight not trusting Trixie to the level of being paranoid. For me her character was written very poorly for the needs of the episode.

Okay, here's a crazy question: If you were in Twilights place, would you really wouldn't you be on the same level of paranoia around Trixie, specially knowing of her past actions?

You're right. It is a crazy question :P The progress of her paranoia didn't went that fast in "What about Discord" for example - it got gradually like that
after Twilight failed and failed again at understanding why her friends get so chummy with Discord, even though,
he is waaaaay more powerful. Well that's all I got, as mentioned what bothers me the most here is the execution, not the idea overall.

I see, well, I am happy you had good time with it, personally it started to fall apart for me during the second half of the ep. But ah, well, they can't be all winners.

I thought it was Fluttershy being scared for the safety of the manticore, rather than scared of it. But I agree that it was most likely not so, or rather, if that was the case, it could have been shown better.
Trixie episodes do seem to bring out the worst in Fluttershy. Remember in Magic Duel when she was so cowardly, she didn't even want to help her friends because she was so scared of going into the Everfree Forest? Weak.
